Rescue and Relocation Program
The primary responsibility of the Rescue and Relocation Program is to help all PWDs that are in need of a new home. Rescue PWDs come to us from shelters, are turned in by owners, are found on various rescue websites or who have been advertised in newspapers or on social media.
Our first goal is to make sure that the PWD is safe. Rescue makes every effort to reunite the rescued dog with its breeder, but many times the breeder is unknown. When the PWDCA breeder is known, we make them aware of the rescue and ask them to take responsibility. In cases where this isn’t geographically possible, we will work with the breeder and assist them in re-homing the dog, with all expenses paid by the breeder.
When the breeder isn’t known, PWDCA Rescue will take full responsibility. Rescue makes sure the dog is well taken care of while waiting for its new home by performing the following:
A forever home for the rescued dog is selected from the Rescue Adoption Applicants.
Rescue also helps counsel owners and helps them reconnect with their breeders or with a mentor. In many cases this can help the owner keep the dog so they can both live happily ever after.
All Rescue placements are followed to make sure the placement is working or Rescue will find a new home for the dog. To date, 100% of Rescue placements have been successful.
Anyone can help with a Rescue by notifying PWDCA Rescue when you learn of a PWD in need - call 877-328-PWDS(7937) or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

PWDCA members can help by volunteering as a Foster Home. A rescue may occur when a PWDCA Regional Rescue Representative is not available or near the location of the incoming dog. A ready list of Foster Homes is needed all over the country.
Foster Homes are crucial to a rescue because a rescue cannot happen without a temporary safe place for the dog once it has been surrendered. It may be a while before you are called, but when a volunteer is needed, you are needed right away.
Additional details on what it means to be a Foster Home are in the Foster Home Information Guide .
Many times PWDs end up in shelters and Rescue wants to make sure that they aren’t misidentified as another breed. Please download this Shelter Flyer and take it to your local shelters in case a PWD ever ends up there.
